He wrote The Growth of Hygienic Science in Popular Science Monthly vol 23, sept 1883 and was a Fellow of the Royal Society. He also wrote The Habitation in Relation to Health in 1879 and was co writer of A Manual of Practical Hygiene with Edmund Alexander Parkes and Frederick N. Owen in 1890.

1881 census has Francis age 47 a physician born in Scotland, living with wife Elleanor 39,daughters Helen age 14,Nora daughter 12, Mary 10, Louise 8, Frances 7, Marguerite 4 and son Francis age 1 and sister Anna age 46 in the Lawns, Obelisk Rd Woolston next door to Thomas Longmore who was a surgeon at Netley too. They had 4 servants.
