Pumford from the Dardenelles

Here is another chapter from Triumphant Over Pain by Elizabeth Braithwaite Turner Buckle who helped in Netley Hospital in 1916-1917.

She concentrates on the story of Pte. Pumford who I managed to find using the Commonwealth Graves website. He was 10780 Pte. Albert Edward Pumford who died 23rd June 1916 and is buried in Newport (St. Woolos) Cemetery.

Albert was one of many who was wounded whilst fighting in the Dardanelles. She describes his injuries " one leg has gone, one eye and a piece of spine is wrecked beyond repair, Pumford cannot heal...."

Elizabeth really tries to make his last few days comfortable for him, getting him some calf's liver for his tea.

She writes that screens were put around the beds usually on the last day or two and that is where most of her work was done.

Albert receives a letter from his mother, she probably didn't see him again.
