The Beloved Husband of Hannah Stokes

                   R.I.P.

An inquest was held into the death of Daniel Stokes at Netley. Daniel was stationed at Devonport and at the beginning of December, became inflicted with religious mania, becoming very violent, and on the 4th December was taken to Netley. Throughout the train journey, Daniel tried to jump through the window and tear his clothes. His guardians had the greatest difficulty in keeping him down, but although once they threw him on his back on the seat, and had to tie his feet and hands together, and, when changing at Salisbury, had to wheel him to the other train on a truck, they never once injured him in any way, or put their knees on his chest.

Whilst at Netley, he was attended to three or four times a day until the 6th but then was to be found to be suffering from pneumonia. It was then discovered that Daniel had several fractured ribs. Daniel died in the early hours of the 10th December.

After due consideration the jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence stating that there was not sufficient evidence to show how the fractures were caused.
