In Loving Memory Of

Harry Lewis Stuart

         MACE

Who died March 24th 1880

Aged 18 Months

Son of Henry.

Harry Lewis Stuart MACE was born in India, the eldest child of Henry Edwin MACE and his wife Annie LEVITT.  Henry Edwin MACE was born in Norwich, the son of a tailor.  He joined the Royal Scots Regiment at the age of 14 and worked his way up from Boy and Drummer to Sergeant, serving on the northwest frontier of India in the Second Afghan War, where he married Annie.  Annie, the daughter of George LEVITT, was an Irish girl who had married Edwin BRAMHALL of the Royal Scots Regiment at the age of 15, but was widowed after only 25 days when her first husband committee suicide.  She married Henry Edwin MACE a little under 5 months later.  Little Harry died at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley aged 18 months and is buried in the military cemetery on the hospital site.  Six months after Harry’s death, his father transferred to the Leicestershire Regiment.  After his discharge from the army, the family moved to Chelsea and later to Lancashire where Henry worked as a commercial traveller before setting up as an independent forage contractor (a dealer in “forage” supplies – hay, corn etc., often for the military), sometimes using the name Edwin Jacob MACE.  Henry & Annie had five more children, although one son, Herbert, died at the age of three while they were living at Chelsea.

Edith MALLINSON died onboard SS Jelunga and was brought from Southampton docks. She was buried on March 29th 1898 age 17 months. Chaplain Mullins took the service. No headstone.

Edith MALLINSON was born in the army barracks at Halifax, Yorkshire.  She was the second child of Private Arthur MALLINSON of the West Riding Regiment and his wife Catherine TUCKWOOD.  When Edith was 3 months old, her father was posted to Malta and the family went with him.  Edith died on board the SS Jelunga while it was in the docks at Southampton upon their return from 1 year and 60 days in Malta.  She is buried in the military cemetery attached to the Royal Victoria Hospital at Netley in Hampshire.  Arthur was often in trouble with the regiment, being promoted and demoted twice.  He was discharged in 1902.  It is not known what Arthur did for a living after leaving the army but the family moved to Berwick-upon-Tweed, Catherine’s home town, where their youngest child was born.  Arthur appears to have died about 6 years later, but Catherine’s fate is unknown.  Their youngest child was adopted by a stonemason and his wife.
